Ear Infection Pathogens

Otitis Media, also known as an ear infection, is a sudden infection of the middle ear. This happens when the Eustachian tube improperly regulates air pressure and allow fluid buildup which can cause bacteria to grow.  Bacterial build up is the most common cause of ear infections but viruses and fungi can also cause ear infections. Such infections often follow respiratory illnesses, spreading to the ear and causing inflammation.

Risk Factors: The condition predominantly affects infants and children under 8 due to their not yet fully developed ear anatomy. Individuals with weakened immune systems are also at higher risk.

Non-contagious Nature: Importantly, ear infections do not spread from one person to another.

Ear Infection Symptoms

Symptoms of an ear infection tend to manifest rapidly and encompass a range of discomforts, including pain within the ear, a rise in body temperature indicative of fever, an overall feeling of tiredness or fatigue, challenges in hearing, the presence of discharge emanating from the ear, and a sensation of pressure inside the ear

 How the Test works

  • The provider collects a specimen by swabbing the patient's outer ear.

  • The sample is then forwarded to ASAP Diagnostics.

  • At ASAP Diagnostics, the lab conducts PCR testing on the sample to detect the presence of pathogens.

Understanding Ear Infection Complications

While many ear infections resolve independently, others necessitate medical treatment. Untreated ear infections can lead to various complications, including temporary or permanent hearing loss. Additionally, they may damage the ear canal or eardrum. A failure to address ear infections can allow the infection to proliferate within the ear, potentially leading to severe health issues like meningitis.
